How To Apply


Qualified young conductors who have recently finished their academic studies or who are working toward graduate diplomas in conducting at top-ranking American music schools, up to the age of 30, may apply. Proficiency in English is required; working knowledge of German is desirable. Non-US citizens are welcome to apply, but the AAF will not be responsible for the acquisition of visas (if necessary).

Application Process & Deadlines

Please submit the following documents (if possible in electronic form) to the AAF at

  • Completed application form (see downloads), including digitally inserted recent photo
  • Two letters of recommendation (the author of the letter of recommendation must email the letter directly to
  • Current résumé/CV, detailing educational background and conducting experience
  • One-page essay describing your objectives during the fellowship
  • A DVD, CD or USB drive of conducting excerpts, along with a detailed listing, must be mailed to the office. You may also send links via email, but applications without a physical DVD, CD or USB drive will not be eligible for consideration

This program is operated by the AAF and funded by AAF Trustee Karl Heinz Faber. The fellowship includes a $1,000 travel reimbursement, accommodation at Schloss Arenberg, and a small stipend. Program dates are mid-July - August 2019.
