Post World War I Aid in Austria & Central Europe
The American Austrian Foundation’s president emeritus and trustee, Gregor Medinger organized a symposium entitled “Post World War I Aid in Austria and Central Europe”, on September 26-27, 2019 at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. The topic is of considerable interest to Mr. Medinger, as both his mother and aunt were beneficiaries of this program, which not only saved children’s lives, but also prevented mass migration.
Herbert Hoover masterminded this massive relief operation and the program served as a model for the Marshall Plan, which helped rebuild Europe after WWII. Although much has been written about the Marshall Plan, the post-World War I aid program is not well known.
Panelists included historians from the Hoover Institute, Stanford University, Institute of Rural History, St. Petersburg State University, Oxford University, TU Dresden, Slovak Academy of Sciences, University of Huddersfield, Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Debrecen. Leon Botstein, President of Bard College delivered the keynote lecture.
We would like to thank the Austrian Academy of Sciences, The Austrian Marshall Foundation, Botstiber Institute for Austrian American Studies for their organizational and financial support and Heidi Ogrinz and Florentine Helbich-Poschacher for research and logistical aid.
