2017-08-10 08:24 | Opera Camps at Schloss Arenberg

During the summer months and Salzburg Festival Season, Schloss Arenberg opens its doors for musicians and artists. An annual highlight are the Opera Camps for children, organized by Hanne Muthspiel-Payer with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Children between the ages of ten to sixteen spend a week with senior musicians and educators creating their own version of classical operas. The camps provide a unique opportunity for children to realize their ideas and to get a glimpse behind the scenes of a theater or opera production.

This year, Schloss Arenberg hosted four one-week Opera Camps for more than 160 children altogether. The children came from 20 different countries including Austria, Belgium, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Guatemala, Italy, Israel, Latvia, Macedonia, Qatar, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine and the US.

This year’s program featured Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s play “Jedermann” and the operas “Wozzeck” of Alban Berg and “Aida” of Guiseppe Verdi, which was chosen for the opera camps. At the end of each camp, the children performed in one of the theaters in Salzburg, presenting their work of art to the audience.
