How To Apply
Eligibility
Qualified young conductors who have recently finished their academic studies or who are working toward graduate diplomas in conducting at top-ranking American music schools, up to the age of 30, may apply.
Proficiency in English is required; working knowledge of German is desirable. Non-US citizens are welcome to apply, as long as they are a student or a recent graduate of an American art program. Please note that if a non-US citizen is selected, the AAF is not responsible for fees associated with acquiring the necessary visa, etc.
Application Process & Deadlines
Please submit your complete application no later than APRIL 21, 2023. Applications submitted via email must be sent to aafconductors@americanaustrianfoundation.org by 5:00pm EST on APRIL 21, 2023.
Please submit the following to the AAF:
- Completed application form, including recent photo (digitally inserted above)
- Current résumé/CV, detailing your educational background and conducting experience
- One-page essay describing your objectives during the fellowship
- Two letters of recommendation (the author of the letter of recommendation may email the letter directly to aafconductors@americanaustrianfoundation.org)
- A DVD, CD, or USB drive of conducting excerpts, along with a detailed listing, must be mailed to the office, postmarked no later than April 21st, 2023. You may also send links via email, but applications without physical media will not be eligible for consideration.
Incomplete applications will not be submitted to the jury. The AAF is not responsible for lost applications.

Details
The American Austrian Foundation has administered this program since 1998. It is funded through the generosity of AAF Treasurer and Board Member Karl Heinz Faber and his wife Edith.
The fellowship includes a $1,500 travel reimbursement, accommodation at Schloss Arenberg, and a small stipend. Program dates are mid-July to August 2023.
